Six Players Earn KGA Am Series Player of the Year Honors

KGA Am Series’ 2022 Players of the Year recognized.

LOUISVILLE, KY (October 3, 2022) – Following seven tournaments from the KGA Am Series, the 2022 Players of the Year from the popular campaign have been determined. In total, six players were presented with at least one crystal based off the cumulative results from the series that began in April at Nevel Meade Golf Club and concluded on September 26 at Lexington Country Club.

On two occasions this season, Camden Robertson of Richmond finished atop the leaderboard in the Open, Gross Division. Those victories plus two other top-five results helped him become this division’s Player of the Year. Originally from Texarkana, Texas, Robertson is a recent addition to the Kentucky golf scene having entered the state on the collegiate level, currently attending Eastern Kentucky University. In his KGA Am Series debut in May, he shot 67 (-3) at Shawnee Golf Course to win by two strokes at the Louisville facility. Later in the season, he posted another round of 67 (-5) at another Louisville-area course in Heritage Hill Golf Club which topped the field there by three strokes. Playing in six events altogether, he never finished worse than T7 which helped him take the season-long prize by a comfortable margin of fifteen points.

The only player to sweep his division’s gross and net titles was David Horning of Albany who did so in the Senior Division. Horning’s year was highlighted by his performance at Shawnee Golf Course where he had the top gross and net scores of the day thanks to a round of 71 (+1) which equated to a net score of 69 (-1). In each of his other five Am Series starts, Horning recorded top-ten finishes every time on both the gross and net sides. It led to a two-point victory in the year-long gross standings and a four-point advantage on the net chart.

Tommy Fike of Hazel was recognized last week as one of the Western Kentucky Am Series’ Players of the Year, and he now has a KGA Am Series Player of the Year title to go alongside that recognition after topping the Masters, Gross Division standings. Fike had the top round from any division in the tournament at Country Club of Owensboro when he shot 67 (-5). That was his only victory from the campaign, but his consistency throughout the year was evident. He never turned in a scorecard worse than 76 (+4) across a stellar season that also saw him win the Masters Division’s title at the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Senior Amateur.

Lexington’s Charles Verrette followed the theme of consistency on his way to winning the Masters, Net Division Player of the Year honor. In six starts, Verrette posted net results of T6 or better each time with a runner-up finish at Harmony Landing topping his performances. He and Rick Harper had been locked in a close race for this title, but a T6 finish for Verrette compared to a T18 from Harper in the KGA Am Series Championship at Lexington Country Club proved to be the difference as Verrette edged Harper by three points.

The margin was even slimmer in the Legends, Gross Division as Elmo Greer was able to finish on top in what he described as a “long-awaited accomplishment that may never come.” It came by just one point over Jim Caudill and three consecutive victories from Greer to close the year got him to the top spot. Greer was the low man in his division at Country Club of Owensboro, Heritage Hill and Lexington Country Club. The Heritage Hill performance was particularly impressive as it came via a round of 70 (-2) This recognition caps off what has been a wonderful year on the golf course for Greer, who was also the oldest competitor at the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur, having teed it up at 73 years of age.

Bill Hostetler rounds out the 2022 KGA Am Series Players of the Year as the recipient of the Legends, Net Division title. Hostetler made five starts and was in the top-four on each occasion, with an opening victory at Nevel Meade in April highlighting his performances. A runner-up result at Lexington Country Club clinched a seven-point advantage for this honor over Greer.

The Kentucky Golf Association congratulates each of these players on their KGA Am Series Player of the Year titles and thanks all players who participated in at least one of these tournaments throughout the season. The KGA also appreciates the hospitality of Nevel Meade Golf Club, Shawnee Golf Course, Big Spring Country Club – Harmony Landing Course, Oldham County Country Club, The Country Club of Owensboro, Heritage Hill Golf Club, and Lexington Country Club for hosting each of these events.

The KGA Am Series’ 2023 schedule will be released this winter alongside all other KGA competitions. In the meantime, the KGA’s 2022 season will conclude with the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Mid-Am at Big Spring Country Club – Harmony Landing Course on October 11-12 and the Two-Person Scramble at Lexington Country Club on October 17.
