Robbie Bender Earns Medalist Honors to Lead U.S. Amateur Qualifiers

Hoosiers’ Bender and Boilermakers’ Snoeberger advance to U.S. Amateur from Nevel Meade.

PROSPECT, KY (July 6, 2022) – The 122nd U.S. Amateur beckons for Louisville native Robbie Bender and Peyton Snoeberger of Williamsport, Indiana. On Wednesday, each player qualified at Nevel Meade Golf Club for the prestigious championship slated to take place at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey this August.

Bender, an incoming junior for the Indiana Hoosiers, claimed medalist honors with rounds of 65-68 for a total score of 133 (-11). That was the best performance of the day, earning him a three-stroke margin of victory over Snoeberger for the medalist distinction. Bender was bogey-free in his first round with a torrid stretch of four birdies in five holes from 14-18 playing particularly key in what resulted in the best round of the day. His afternoon round featured two eagles highlighting his scorecard which came on the par-five 2nd and 18th holes. The fantastic performance results in what will be the first USGA National Championship of Bender’s young career.

Snoeberger, a Big 10 rival of Bender’s at Purdue, began his day with a round of 69 (-3) in the morning that left him chasing somewhat entering the afternoon round. At the halfway mark of the day, -5 was the score holding second place. But seven birdies in round two from Snoeberger helped him shoot 67 (-5), getting him to 136 (-8) for the Qualifier and one stroke clear of third place. Like Bender, this will be Snoeberger’s first time competing on the biggest stage of amateur golf within a USGA National Championship.

Two Kentuckians earned the first and second alternate positions with Nicholasville’s Grey Goff getting the first spot with a total score of 137 (-7). Stephen Warren of Owensboro received the second alternate spot after shooting 138 (-6). In a rare occurrence at a USGA Qualifier, no playoffs were needed to determine any of the automatic qualifiers or alternate positions.

The next USGA Qualifier on the KGA’s schedule takes place two weeks from today on Wednesday, July 20 with the state’s U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier. Gibson Bay Golf Course will play host to that event. Many amateurs will also continue playing in qualifiers in the immediate future, with four of the five Kentucky Open qualifiers set to take place next week, including one at Nevel Meade Golf Club on Thursday, July 14.
