Davis Boland and Rodney Chancey Victorious in Kentucky Senior Team Championship

Boland and Chancey win in Danville.

DANVILLE, KY (May 24, 2022) – Davis Boland and Rodney Chancey have won the Kentucky Senior Team Championship. It’s the first time each player has won the tournament and it comes at Danville Country Club after the winning duo prevailed by three strokes.

This two-day competition at the revered central Kentucky layout began with players playing under the chapman alternate shot format on Monday. Boland/Chancey got a leg up on their competitors with a round of 70 (-2) in the first round which featured three birdies against just one bogey. That gave them a three-shot edge entering Tuesday’s final round, which was played under the four-ball format. Three birdies in the first six holes bumped their lead to four and looking in complete control, but some stress did enter their round when three bogeys in between holes 9-15 trimmed their lead to two. Yet a birdie from Boland on the 17th got their lead back to three, and a par on the closing hole concluded matters with the teams of Mike Brumfield/Mike Crowe, Tom Campbell/Michael Hall and Gary Backlund/Chris Hill all finishing in a tie for second.

“We didn’t put ourselves in any real trouble this week – especially in the alternate shot round,” Boland summarized. “We made a few mistakes, but we fed well off one another and for lack of a better word, things were simple. It was low-stress golf.”

“Winning is always big,” Chancey said. “Like Davis said, we didn’t encounter a lot of stress until we backed up a little bit on the back nine today, but we kept it together. It’s great to win at any time but especially when it’s with a great friend. I was flattered when Davis asked if I wanted to play in this tournament with him. He’s a great player and I’m just happy I was able to help when I could.”

The tournament also featured two divisions for teams where both players were 60 years of age or older. Last year, Greg Engle and David Rudder took the overall title at The University Club at Arlington but now that both players have reached 60, they competed in the Masters Division. The result was the same as it was in 2021 with the powerhouse pairing winning by four strokes. With 136 (-8), they had the lowest gross total score of any of the three winning teams. It took a comeback effort though as they started the day trailing James Simpson and Vincent Vaughn by a stroke, but two birdies from Engle/Rudder in their first three holes got them ahead and they never relinquished the top spot from there.

Jim Caudill and Mike Price sailed to a smooth eleven-shot victory in the Legends Division, reserved for players aged 70 or older. They finished the tournament with a two-day total of 139 (-5). Their opening day score of 69 (-3) in chapman alternate shot did the bulk of the work in creating their victory, as the duo recorded six birdies in the harder of the two formats.

There were also net champions awarded from each of the three divisions, beginning with David Combs/John Doster who won the Senior net title with a final score of 139 (-5).

Despite coming up just short in the gross contest of the Masters Division, Simpson/Vaughn were able to emerge victorious in the net flight. An impressive number of 129 (-15) won that competition by five shots.

Doug Aaron and Bruce Walters received the net title in the Legends Division after Caudill/Price had topped that contest as well, but their gross victory shifted the title to the next team in line with Aaron/Walters benefitting.
