Top Seniors of 2016 Named

It was an exciting 2016 season for the Kentucky Golf Association and they are pleased to announce the top Seniors according to the Bushnell Kentucky Amateur Standings!    

The Tom Musselman Player of the Year honors the top Amateur between the ages 55-64.  This year's highly contested race went to Gary Backlund, Mt.Sterling by 282.4 points.  The 2014 Tom Musselman Player of the Year had another solid season that was highlighted by a Low Amateur Finish in the Kentucky Senior Open at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club.  He also recorded a first place finish in the Senior Division of the Kentucky Mid-Amateur Championship at Danville Country Club.  He was Runner-up in the Kentucky Senior Match Play Championship at Boone's Trace National Golf Club.  He also capped off a successful season in the KGA Amateur Series with a victory in the Senior Division of the Series Championship at Heritage Hill Golf Course.

The Dale Barnstable Player of the Year honors the top Amateur between the ages 65-71.  This year's winner is Jim Caudill of Morehead with a 309 point victory.  Caudill had a fantastic season of play in the Masters Division of the KGA Amateur Series.  He won Series Championship in that division at Heritage Hill Golf Course.  He also teamed up with Eddie Venters for a Masters Division victory in the Kentucky Four-Ball Championship at Gibson Bay Golf Course.  Caudill also recorded a Third Place finish in the Masters Divison of the Kentucky Mid-Amateur Championship at Danville Country Club and was Fifth in the Masters Division of the Kentucky Senior Amateur at Audubon Country Club.

The Don Smith Player of the Year honors the top Amateur who is 72 or older.  This year's winner, Don Wood of Louisville, is no stranger to this title and ran away the race in 2016 by 528 points.  Wood posted a victory in the Legends Division of the Kentucky Senior Amateur at Audubon Country Club and recorded First Place finishes in the Masters Division in two KGA Amateur Series events.  This led him to a KGA Amateur Series Championship victory at Heritage Hill Golf Course.  He also joined up with Jim Richards to finish Second in the Legends Division of the Kentucky Senior Team Championship at University Club of Kentucky. The newly named  Herb McGuire Player of the Year honors the top Amateur between the ages 40-54.  Don Kohler, of Prospect was named at the top of this year's point list by 191 points. Kohler had a steady 2016 season that featured a Second Place finish in his division in the Kentucky Senior Amateur at Audubon Country Club and a Third Place finish in the Kentucky Mid-Amateur at Danville Country Club in his respective division.  He recorded two First Place victories in the KGA Amateur Series before finishing second in the Series Championship at Heritage Hill Golf Course. Congratulations to each of these individuals on a terrific season! We enjoyed watching them play some of their best golf!
