OWENSBORO, Ky. — Nicholas Jones played 38 holes on Monday and needed every one of them.

Jones won two matches in extra holes on the opening day of the 15th Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Match Play Championship at Owensboro Country Club, closing out both on the first playoff hole to reach the Round of 16.

In the opening round, Jones built a 2UP lead through nine holes against Nolan Warren before Warren squared the match at the 14th and moved 1UP with a win at the 15th. Jones won the 18th to force extra holes and took the match 1UP at the 19th.

The afternoon draw offered no relief. Jones led Joshua Rhodes by three after nine before Rhodes won the 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th to seize a 1UP advantage of his own. Jones again won the 18th to extend the match and again prevailed at the 19th.

Jones was not the only player to require extra holes in the Round of 32. Levi Keith led Stephen Warren by two after 11 holes before Warren won the 12th and 14th to draw even. Keith won the 17th, Warren answered at the 18th, and Keith settled it at the 19th.

Three matches opened the championship in the morning to fill out the Round of 32. Bennett Myers dropped the first hole to Landon Starns but answered with a run that put him 4UP at the turn. Starns won the 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th to pull within one before Myers took the 16th and closed it out 2 and 1. Nate Surrey never trailed against Cesidio Orlando, winning the 12th, 13th and 14th to finish 6 and 4.

Neither Myers nor Surrey survived the Round of 32. Robbie Keyes trailed Myers early before winning seven of the next 11 holes for a 5-and-4 victory, and Matt Epperson led Surrey throughout in a 3-and-1 win.

Cameron Carrico posted the most decisive result of the day, beating Sean Preston 8 and 6. Andy Roberts followed with a 6-and-4 win over David Hebdon. Colton Woosley, Mason Butler and Thomas Henderson each advanced 4 and 3, over Ryland Chaney, Charlie Spiller and Charles Brown, respectively.

Andrew Buse trailed Tanner Kight by two through six holes before winning four of the next five to take the match 2 and 1. Paxton McKelvey also advanced 2 and 1, defeating Cameron Buse. Kevin Waldie beat Zac Rambo 2UP, and Hunter Ford won the 11th and 12th to break a deadlock and defeat Larry Maxwell 2UP.

Two matches came down to the final hole. Hayden Warren led Noah Combs from the opening hole through the 12th before Combs squared the match at the 13th and went ahead at the 15th. Warren leveled it again at the 16th, but Combs won the 17th and halved the 18th to advance 1UP. Eric King held a three-hole lead on two separate occasions against Jimmy Kev Clements, who won the 14th and 15th to make it a one-hole match over the closing stretch. King held on to advance 1UP.

Eric Fuldner advanced by forfeit.

Senior Division

Five matches were contested in the Senior Division, with the top three seeds receiving byes into Tuesday's quarterfinals.

Bryan Conway won the first three holes against Trae Joyce and never looked back, reaching 4UP at the turn before wins at the 11th, 12th and 14th completed a 6-and-5 victory.

David Horning and Paul LaLonde were even through four holes before Horning won the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth to move 4UP. LaLonde won the 13th to trim the margin, but Horning restored it and finished the match at the 15th, 4 and 3.

Jared Baysinger dropped the opening hole to Mark LaLonde and the match remained level through five. Baysinger won the sixth, eighth and ninth to go 3UP and again held a three-hole lead after the 12th. LaLonde won the 14th and 16th to get within one, but Baysinger closed out the final two holes to advance 1UP.

Mark Knecht led David Rambo by three after 13 holes before Rambo won the 14th, 15th and 16th to square the match. Knecht answered with the 17th and 18th to win 2UP.

David Sykes and Richard Hayden traded early holes before Sykes moved ahead at the sixth. Hayden squared the match at the 10th, only for Sykes to win the 11th and regain the lead. Sykes added the 15th and closed it at the 17th, 2 and 1.

Play continues Tuesday with the Round of 16 and quarterfinals in the Open Division and the quarterfinals in the Senior Division. Semifinals and championship matches in both divisions are set for Wednesday.
