No Place Like Home for Taryn Walker at the 98th Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Women's Amateur

PROSPECT, Ky. — The 98th Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Women's Amateur has its champion, and she never had to leave home to find her moment.

Taryn Walker claimed the Kentucky Women's Amateur title on Wednesday at Hunting Creek Country Club, defeating Grace Soale 2 and 1 in a championship match that went the distance. Walker, a longtime member at Hunting Creek, won the title for the second time in her career, 21 years after her first championship in 2005.

It did not come easy.

Walker built a commanding advantage on the front nine, being 4UP into the back nine and appearing to be in full control of the match. Then Soale found her rhythm.

Soale won hole 10, halved 11, and then won three consecutive holes to pull the match back to all square. What looked like a comfortable Walker victory had become anyone's match.

"I really found that hitting the fairway and hitting the green, those two things will make or break your round," Soale said. "Just being able to have a shot at birdie, even if it is not a close putt, you still have a chance."

Walker steadied herself and refused to let the match slip away. The turning point came on hole 16, a drivable par four with a tee placement that rewarded aggression. Earlier in the day, during her semifinal match, Walker had driven the green on 16 and nearly made a hole-in-one. She made the same bold decision in the final, and it paid off, giving her the lead she needed heading into the closing holes.

Walker and Soale halved 17, leaving Walker 1UP heading into the final hole. Soale needed to win 18 to force a playoff, but Walker closed her out on 18 to seal the 2 and 1 victory and claim the title.

"Her coming back on me, my nerves are shot," Walker said. "Luckily, I made some clutch shots on 16 and 17, just trying to make par on 18 to stay one up."

Walker's quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship matches all came down to the 18th hole, a stretch of sustained pressure that left the new champion running on fumes by the time the final putt dropped.

"I'm exhausted," Walker said. "I don't know if I'm more exhausted mentally or physically. It was hot today. More mentally tired, just grinding, trying to stay focused on each hole, each shot."

Walker credited her iron play as the difference maker all week, even as her putter gave her trouble down the stretch.

"I feel like my iron game is what won me the championship, honestly," she said. "I hit the ball well all week."

Soale, who made the championship match in what was a breakout performance, refused to go quietly. After a difficult front nine, she began finding fairways and greens on the back and made a run that had Walker feeling every bit of the pressure.

"I really found that hitting the fairway and hitting the green, those two things will make or break your round," Soale said. "Just being able to have a shot at birdie, even if it is not a close putt, you still have a chance."

Soale reflected on the experience with a perspective well beyond her years. With a year remaining before college, she left Hunting Creek knowing exactly what this week meant for her development.

"I can definitely see myself getting so much better," she said. "I know what I need to work on. I still have a whole year before I even go to college. I can get a lot better."

The runner-up also offered a telling assessment of where her game stands among the best in Kentucky women's golf.

"I may be pretty young right now, but I am up there with some of the best," Soale said. "Just knowing that I can beat them. It is possible."

Soale will next head to the PGA Championship in Frisco, Texas, where she is looking forward to the challenge of longer yardages.

For Walker, the setting made the moment impossible to put into words. Winning on her home course, surrounded by her club, her family, and her community, left the new champion searching for the right way to describe it.

"A lot of emotions," she said tearfully.

For Walker, there truly is no place like home. Twenty-one years after her first Kentucky Women's Amateur title, she stood on the course she knows better than any other, surrounded by the community she loves, and delivered when it mattered most. Wednesday at Hunting Creek Country Club was not just a championship. It was personal.
