The Competitors of the Kentucky PGA Assistant and Women's Championships

On Monday, September 27, South Park Country Club in Louisville will host the final two Kentucky PGA Section Championships of 2021. The National Car Rental Kentucky Assistant PGA Professional Championship is one of those, which is a 36-hole competition where the top-two finishers will advance to the National Championship this autumn in Florida. The Kentucky Women's PGA Professional Championship will also take place and consist of an 18-hole competition to determine the year's top female within the Section. All players from both tournaments will begin play on Monday at 8:30 a.m. EDT in a shotgun start. These are the players who will be in action.

Matt Bloom – An Associate Professional at South Park Country Club who will be competing at his home course next week. He finished in the top-ten in last year’s Assistants Championship. Bloom got engaged last winter to his fiancé Gabbi, who is a CrossFit trainer in Louisville. Most importantly, they are parents to a very good doggo named Arnie.

Austin Burke – An Associate Professional at Audubon Country Club in Louisville. Burke has been at Audubon for about a year and a half and had previously gotten his start in the golf industry working at nearby Iroquois Golf Course. Like Bloom, he is also engaged to be married, but did his proposal to fiancé Taylor at his home club of Audubon. He is a diehard fan of the Atlanta Braves.

Nicholas Daugherty – An Associate Professional at The Golf Complex in Paducah. He has quickly established a strong reputation for being a top instructor in western Kentucky. His teaching philosophy is as follows: “I believe everyone has a unique golf swing that is based off their personal body build and their personal strengths. My philosophy is simple; I analyze each golf swing with the information that the ball gives us to build a golf swing that relies on technique rather than timing. Doing this makes the golf swing more reliable and easier to repeat for competitive and recreational golfers.”

Joe Davis – An Associate Professional at Canewood Golf Course in Georgetown. Davis is relatively new in his journey to PGA Membership, having started his job at Canewood in the fall of 2020. This will mark his first competition within the Section.

Chad Douglas, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green. Douglas is wrapping up his third year at what will be the home of the 2022 U.S. Girls Junior and has previously spent time at facilities in Kentucky such as Louisville Country Club and Oxmoor Country Club.

Matt Duwel, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville. He completed the PGA Golf Management program at Eastern Kentucky and then crossed the river into Ohio to spend several years working at Terrace Park Country Club in Milford. He came back to the Kentucky side of the river late in 2019 to work at Big Spring. He was active in his travels during his internships, venturing to facilities in Nebraska, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Arizona.

Glenn Garnett – An Associate Professional at Man O’War Golf in Lexington. Garnett joined the team there early in 2018 and is wrapping up his fourth season with them now. Previously, he worked at Duckers Lake Golf Course in Frankfort where he got his start as a PGA Associate. He got engaged to his now fiancé Colleen earlier this summer.

Josh Griffin, PGA - An Assistant Golf Professional at Wildwood Country Club in Louisville. Griffin won this year’s Assistant Professional of the Year Award and chairs the Section’s Assistants Committee. He finished in the top-five at last year’s Assistants Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club. He is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky’s PGA Golf Management program.

Seth Hall – The new Head Golf Professional at Henry County Country Club in New Castle. Hall will soon be a PGA Member, having completed the Playing Ability Test earlier this summer. In the last few years before his new gig at Henry County, he had been an Assistant Professional at Polo Fields Golf & Country Club. He was apart of the victorious team in the Pro-Lady presented by Mobile Pro Shop earlier this summer.

Ben Hartsell, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at Seneca Golf Course in Louisville. After graduating from the Mississippi State PGA Golf Management program in 2017, he first came to Kentucky in 2019 to work at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club. Hartsell has since taken his talents a dozen miles west to Seneca, where he has worked for nearly a year now. His Instagram profile is very aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Daniel Iceman, PGA - An Assistant Golf Professional at Weissinger Hills Golf Course in Shelbyville. Iceman played collegiately for the University of Louisville and is a two-time winner of the ROLEX Assistant Player of the Year in Kentucky, having won in 2016 and 2018. He also competed on the Mackenzie Tour in 2018 where he logged eight starts north of the border.

Nick Johnston – An Associate Professional at Wildwood Country Club in Louisville. Johnston won the 2019 Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur at Country Club of Paducah. He also finished T8 in the 2020 Kentucky Open. This has been a prolific year for Johnston in Kentucky PGA events, as he’s notched several wins which has him well out in front of the ROLEX Assistant Player of the Year standings.

Mark Kruszewski, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. Kruszewski moved to Kentucky in the autumn of 2020 having previously spent several years working at Pete Dye Golf Club in West Virginia. During his time in college, he completed work experience at Augusta National Golf Club by working at Berckman’s Place during multiple editions of The Masters.

Jake Martin, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville. In 2020, Martin was presented with the Section’s Assistant Golf Professional of the Year Award. He was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and competed on mini-tours in California in the 1990s, lodging a couple of victories. He was elected to PGA Membership in 2000. Martin moved to Louisville in 2017 and has been with Big Spring ever since.

Matt McCrady – The Director of Golf & Operations at Man O’War Golf in Lexington. McCrady has been with Man O’War for about two years now and was previously at Lexington-area clubs such as Keene Trace Golf Club and Thoroughbred Golf Club. He is a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Bobby Newberry – An Associate Professional at Louisville Country Club. Newberry was on the winning team of the Adidas Pro-Junior at Juniper Hill Golf Course. That has helped him get to fifth place in this year’s ROLEX Assistant Player of the Year standings. He notched a top-three finish in last year’s Assistants Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club.

Nick Newcomb – An Associate Professional at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray. He was inducted into the Murray State University Hall of Fame after a prolific college career with the Racers. He finished in the top-twenty at the Kentucky Open earlier this summer. His brother Patrick won on PGA TOUR Latino America earlier this summer.

Tyler Oldham – An Associate Professional at Nevel Meade Golf Club in Prospect. He started working at Nevel Meade earlier this year and has played in several KPGA events since then, helping him get inside the top-fifteen on the ROLEX Assistant Player of the Year standings.

Mitch Otten, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. A Cincinnati native, Otten graduated from the PGA Golf Management program at Eastern Kentucky University in 2019. Along the way, he completed internships at illustrious facilities like Kenwood Country Club, Cincinnati Country Club and Essex Country Club in Massachusetts.

Robbie Parsons – An Associate Professional at Drake Creek Golf Club in Paducah. Parsons has been at Drake Creek for close to two years now. Two weekends ago, he was apart of the coaching staff of the Western Kentucky All-Stars in the PGA Jr. League Regional Championship. The team finished in third place that weekend thanks in large part to Parsons’ leadership.

Christian Ramirez, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at Elizabethtown Country Club. Ramirez completed the PGA Golf Management program at Eastern Kentucky in 2020 and has been a constant fixture at E-town as he spent three of his four internships working there. His other work experience took him to Gardiner’s Bay Country Club in Shelter Island, New York.

Jacob Schakat, PGA – An Assistant Golf Professional at Indian Hills Country Club in Bowling Green. Schakat finished in second place in this tournament a year ago, which earned him a trip to Florida to compete in the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship.

Kim Shafer, PGA – A PGA Jr. League Regional Manager for the PGA of America. Even with her residing in Louisville, Shafer manages PGA Jr. League activities for the Indiana, Michigan, Northern Ohio, and Southern Ohio Sections. Before taking this position, she worked at Golf House Kentucky for several years in the mid-2010s and was the Director of Instruction at Hurstbourne Country Club for more than fifteen years prior to that.

Nicholas Spath, PGA - An Assistant Professional at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville. Spath is a product of Eastern Kentucky’s PGA Golf Management program and completed a notable collection of internships by working at Congressional Country Club along with The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sara Stephens, PGA – The General Manager at Stephens Golf Center in Burlington and defending champion of the Section’s Women’s Championship. Stephens is an alumna of the Kentucky Wildcats’ Women’s Golf team and has been a PGA Member for more than six years now. Earlier this month, she had one of the performances of the season in Kentucky golf when she shot 72 (E) in her first competitive start of the season after giving birth to her and husband Andrew’s second son in March.

Brandon Tereshko – An Associate Professional at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect. Tereshko recently joined their staff and began the PGA’s Associate program earlier this year. He competed in the Kentucky Open at Persimmon Ridge Golf Club but finished just on the wrong side of the cutline. His brother Justin will be competing in the U.S. Mid-Am from Massachusetts the next several days.

Eric Voss, PGA - An Assistant Golf Professional at Bowling Green Country Club. Voss was born and raised in Decatur, Alabama. He obtained PGA membership through the Mississippi State PGA Golf Management program. He joined the staff at Bowling Green earlier this year after previously working in the Carolinas Section. He finished T16 in the Section Championship at his home club last month.

Anna Walker – An Associate Professional at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect. Walker graduated from King University in Bristol, Tennessee. She played golf there before graduating in 2015 with a degree in Business while specializing in Marketing and minoring in Photography. She is new to the golf industry and to Louisville, having served in the U.S. Army as a Combat Documentation and Production Specialist before joining the Hunting Creek team.

Logan Watts, PGA - An Assistant Golf Professional at Louisville Country Club. In 2013, Watts made a hole-in-one at the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship and won $25,000 in the opening round.
