Fitch/Vanover/Carrico/King Win Pro-Am Championship at Big Spring

LOUISVILLE, KY (May 17, 2021) – Big Spring Country Club had a big field on hand for the Kentucky PGA’s Pro-Am Championship on Monday. 164 players in 41 teams took to the site of 1952 PGA Championship today, and while a new name will be added to the Wanamaker Trophy later this week, it was Jason Fitch, Darrell Vanover, Cameron Carrico, and Randy King who got the top prize on this occasion at the site of Jim Turnesa’s major championship triumph. It was a score of 134 (-10) that won the foursome a two-stroke victory where the format called for the two best gross scores on each hole.

A large part of the team’s win can be attributed to the round of Carrico, who tied the low individual round of the day with a 69 (-3), which was also shot by Cayden Pope. For Carrico, he had seven birdies throughout the day which included three straight out of the gates on holes 1, 2 and 3 to begin his round. Five other birdies from his teammates throughout the day added up to the top prize for the triumphant foursome.

Logan Watts won low professional honors with a round of 70 (-2). His brother Blake, Nathan Downs and Andrew Lardner all finished one shot behind Watts to each finish in a tie for second place.

NOTES & STATS

  • A true oddity today, there were six total eagles made from all players and more than half of them came on a par-four. The par-five 1st and par-five 16th each surrendered one eagle, but otherwise, Nick Johnston and Brian Hunt each made eagle on the par-four 12th, Ryan Crowdis made eagle on the par-four 14th, and Hayden Hollon holed out on the par-four 18th.
  • The toughest hole of the competition was the uphill, dogleg-right par-four 13th. Water in play off the tee and a tucked hole location made par a good score, as its stroke-to-par average was +0.63.
  • The good news for players was that the next hole, the par-four 14th, was the easiest hole of the tournament. 31 birdies and the eagle from Crowdis led to it playing +0.18.
  • The two nines played about equally today in terms of difficulty, with the front nine playing slightly harder via a scoring average of 39.82. The back nine’s average was 39.49, adding up to an 18-hole average of 79.31.
