Assistants/Associates Up 3-2 After Day One at Kaiser Cup

Assistants/Associates take 3-2 lead at halfway point of Kaiser Cup.

FLORENCE, IN (April 3, 2023) – The Kentucky PGA’s 2023 tournament season is officially underway after the opening day of the 27th Kaiser Cup matches at Belterra Golf Club. Ten of the 2022 season’s top Member Professionals and ten of the Section’s best Assistants and Associates are competing in the Ryder Cup-style contest which began with five four-ball matches on Monday.

All five matches needed a full 18 holes to decide the outcome with each matchup finishing either 1 UP or 2 UP. The Assistants/Associates took the first two points with captain Daniel Iceman III, PGA and Gabe Wheeler taking match one, followed shortly by Chad Douglas, PGA and Brandon Sanner making it 2-0. The Members responded with two consecutive victories of their own with David Huffman, PGA and Bruce Oldendick, PGA putting the first point for their team on the board before Tom Walters, PGA and John Mullendore, PGA squared the overall score at 2-2.

An important final match between Aaron Eldridge and Johnny Vidal against Chris Schuler, PGA and Ryan Sanders, PGA went the way of Eldridge/Vidal to put the Assistants/Associates up 3-2 at day’s end. With Tuesday’s weather forecast calling for thunderstorms for a good portion of the day, that match could be the deciding point if play is unable to commence on the final day.

If play does take place as scheduled on Tuesday, the Assistants/Associates will enter the day hoping to snap a four-year winning streak that the Members currently own in the Kaiser Cup. Ten singles matches will decide the outcome with the Assistants/Associates needing 8 total points to win back the Kaiser Cup, which would extend the overall tally in Kaiser Cup history to 15-12 in their favor.
