Preview: 100th Kentucky Open

The 100th Kentucky Open at Kearney Hill Golf Links is set to begin on Tuesday, July 30. The popular Lexington venue and the Kentucky PGA Section are looking forward to a wonderful week celebrating a century of this historic championship by having 156 of Kentucky’s finest professionals and amateurs compete for Kentucky golf’s most prestigious trophy.

54 holes of stroke play will take place July 30-August 1 with a 36-hole cut taking place to narrow the field down to the top 70 and ties for Thursday’s final round. 91 amateurs and 75 Professionals compose this year’s field after qualifying via a previous exemption or advancing through one of the five local qualifiers held this month across the state.

As was the case during the first two rounds of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur, the rules committee has grouped all previous Kentucky Open champions together for the first two rounds which will be the marquee groups on Tuesday and Wednesday. The first of those groups will tee off the first hole at 12:45 p.m. EDT on Tuesday containing Chris Osborne (1995), Andy Roberts (2010) and Ralph Landrum (1987). Following them at 12:55 p.m. EDT is the group of Kent Bulle (2015), Keith Ohr (2001, 2012) and Matthew Savage (2006, 2009).

A strong field will look to add their name to the trophy these six gentlemen have already had their names etched into. Among the other notable players competing in the 100th Kentucky Open include the following:

  • John Bachman – A KPGA Professional from Lake Forest Country Club in Louisville who won the Kentucky PGA Professional Championship at Kearney Hill in 2012.
  • Nick Johnston – Fresh off his win at last month’s Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Kentucky Amateur at Country Club of Paducah, this Louisville amateur seeks his second major triumph in Kentucky this summer.
  • Grover Justice – The reigning KPGA Player of the Year who recently competed in the Barbasol Championship. Justice has already won four times on the KPGA circuit in 2019 and lost in a playoff to Cale Barr in the 2005 Kentucky Open, the last time the event was contested at Kearney Hill.
  • Jesse Massie – Having already won three KPGA Section events this season, the Associate from Woodhaven Country Club in Louisville will be one of the favorites to win beginning the week.
  • Andrew Stephens – A KPGA Professional from Stephens Golf Academy in Burlington, Stephens won last year’s Kentucky PGA Professional Championship when it was held at Kearney Hill.

Defending champion Trey Shirley, who won the 2018 Kentucky Open at Big Spring Country Club Inc. – Harmony Landing Campus with a score of 198 (-15), will not be in the field as he has been playing on the PGA Tour’s MacKenzie Tour in Canada this summer.

The field at the 100th Kentucky Open will compete for a first-place prize of $10,000, provided he is a professional. He will also join Kentucky golf immortality and have his name associated with Byron Nelson, Gay Brewer Jr., Larry Gilbert, Jodie Mudd, and others as champions of the Kentucky Open.

To celebrate 100 years of the Kentucky Open, the Kentucky PGA will be hosting PGA Golf Night at Kearney Hill Golf Links on Monday, July 29 from 6-8 p.m. EDT before the tournament begins. This fun event will be free and welcome to all Kentucky golfers. Music, food and instruction from KPGA Professionals will be available for each attendee to partake in.
