Lydia Gumm Triumphs for Her Second Kentucky Women's Open Title

Lydia Gumm taps in her birdie putt for her second Kentucky Women's Open title

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (July 18, 2023) – Though the event again faced some severe weather threats as the final groups approached the last hole, Lydia Gumm closed out her stellar return to golf in Kentucky. With an even-par round of 72 today, she claimed the event by 9 shots to add another Women's Open win to her 2016 title.

Gumm had a steady second round, compiling 16 pars, with all but 2 coming on the first 14 holes. Her only bogey of the tournament came on the par-4 15th. However, she quickly corrected it by finishing with a 2-putt birdie on the par-5 18th hole. She totaled one eagle, eight birdies and just one bogey over the two days. Gumm stated that it was "really cool to be back" playing this tournament, contested only 20 minutes from her hometown of Radcliff. She was especially appreciative of having her dad as her caddy. She returns for her third year as the head coach for the University of Houston women's golf team this fall.

There were a pair of runner-ups in Macie Brown and Abbie Lee. Both shot matching scores of 71-73-144. Their statistics mirrored each other again today, each with three bogeys and two birdies. Brown begins her freshman year playing for Vanderbilt University in the fall, while Lee returns to compete for Middle Tennessee State University for her junior year.

An additional impressive feat comes from Christine Lindsey, another fellow champion of the event in 2002. Lindsey has played in 26 of the 27 years of the tournament, missing just 2022. Despite her full-time career as a real estate agent, she is a PGA Professional who continues to find time to compete. She fired 76-83-159 for the tournament.
