Roberts Tops Kentucky Amateurs

The Kentucky Golf Association is pleased to announce it's top amateur of the 2016 season.  Andy Roberts of Owensboro was named the John C. Owens Player of the Year based on the Bushnell Kentucky Amateur Standings.  Roberts, no stranger to great golf as the 2010 Kentucky Open Champion, had a fantastic 2016 spring, summer and fall.

It all began with the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. on May 21-25. Roberts and partner, Rob Crockett, II qualified for match play, finishing tied for seventh in stroke play before falling in the Round of 64.  He then finished Runner-Up to 2015 Player of the Year, Denver Haddix, Jr. in the Kentucky Amateur Match Play Championship at Boone's Trace National, in a final round that saw many low numbers the scorecard between both players. Roberts was medalist in the stroke play portion of the event with a round of 64.  He then really made everyone take notice when he won the 2016 Clark's Pump-n-Shop Kentucky Amateur at Bellefonte Country Club.  Roberts posted a nine-under-par total and a two-shot victory over Haddix and Joe Deraney.

His birdie making ways didn't stop there with a top 15 finish in the Kentucky Open (he was the seventh low amateur) at University of Louisville Golf Club.  He and Crockett teamed up again to finish as the Runners-Up at the Kentucky Four-Ball Championship at Gibson Bay Golf Course.  He also finished third for the second year in a row at the Kentucky Mid-Amateur Championship and represented Kentucky in the USGA Men's State Team at Country Club of Birmingham  in Birmingham, Ala.  The team (which included Haddix and Deraney) finished in an impressive 12th place. With all of these stand-out performances, Roberts took home John C Owens Player of the Year by 734 points over Haddix.

Congratulations to Andy on a terrific season! He will be honored at the Kentucky Golf Associaton's Fall Meeting, as well as the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame Ceremony.
