Rhodes Mid-Am Medalist

It was a hot and very humid day for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier on August 10 at Lexington Country Club.  Almost 50 players registered for the coveted two spots and two alternate positions advancing to this top event on the USGA's championship calendar. Josh Rhodes of Paducah was in the third group out of the day and posted a solid round of even-par 72 to set the tone for the rest of the field.  His round included four birdies and he played the par three holes at one-under-par.  This was good enough for medalist honors on the day.  Rhodes will advance to Stonewall Links in Elverson, Pennsylvania on September 10-15 to compete against the top amateur players over the age of 25 in the U.S. Mid-Am Championship. He made it to the Round of 32 matches in the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. A nice wave of players, including three friends, all finished one shot behind Rhodes for the last spot and two alternate positions.  Joe Deraney, Denver Haddix and Matt Epperson of Lexington all fired rounds of one-over-par 73, as did David Watts of Cleveland, Tennessee.  The playoff lasted three extra holes with Watts emerging as the victor, taking home the final spot in the USGA Championship.  Epperson secured the First Alternate Position and Haddix secured the second. Congratulations to these fine gentlemen! We look forward to rooting them on as they compete on the national stage!
