Haddix, Humphrey Match Play Champs

The final matches of the Kentucky Match Play Championships on Thursday, June 9 at Boone's Trace National Golf Club were more of the same weather and talent-wise - terrific!  Four Divisions (Senior Championship, Senior Handicap, Open Championship and Players Division) of amateur golfers went head-to-head one last time for a great showdown. The Senior Handicap Division started the day out with Tim Dudley of Bronston stretching his final match to the final hole with Dan Trent of La Grange. He took home the 2 up victory after some great play and overcoming a 1 down deficit at the turn. In the Players Division, Ben Kendrick of Danville played solidly to wear down Nick Wilkins of Frankfort in a 5&4 victory to take home top honors.  These young players both had a great week of golf! The Kentucky Senior Match Play Championship featured the same final pairing as the 2015 Final - Steve Humphrey of Lexington and Gary Backlund of Mt. Sterling.  Both players played a solid match all day long.  Backlund fought a balky putter at times and Humphrey's only mistake came with an errant tee shot on the 10th tee. Both players posted mostly pars and birdies with Humphrey coming away with the 3&2 victory and defending his title.

The Kentucky Match Play Championship was whittled down to the Upper Bracket and Lower Bracket Matches in the morning - where Denver Haddix, Jr. of Lexington played like his hair was on fire to defeat Louisville's Rob Crockett, II 5&4.  Owensboro's Andy Roberts and Lexington's Joe Deraney battled one another to the final tee shot with Roberts coming away with the 2 up victory.  In the final match, it was time for the #1 seed and medalist (Roberts) to take on the 2014 Match Play Champion (Haddix).  We anticipated a lot of birdies in this final match and neither player disappointed.  Roberts was 5 under on his round and Haddix was 10 (unofficially).  It was a fun, dart-throwing contest with Haddix coming away with the 2016 Match Play Title and a 4&2 victory. Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to all who participated and to Boone's Trace National for being fantastic hosts!
